VESTERBRO FORUM
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK | DIS STUDIO | FALL 2017
Classical music has had a long reputation for being an exclusive art, one reserved for the enjoyment of retirees, the affluent, and classically trained musicians. In an effort to expand classical music’s audience, break the barriers of entry to this longstanding art, and open new opportunities to the community, Vesterbro Forum opens its doors to all in the neighborhood. Rooted in the ideas of approachability, adaptability, and fostering community interaction through accessible public space, this new concert venue places itself right in the middle of all the action.
A central concert hall sits as the focal point of the project — serving duel purpose as a place for musical performances, as well as a community forum for daily use. The community also gains access to spaces for practicing, teaching, and listening to classical music. Additionally, flexible spaces are available for community members to use for their next event or meeting. As a result of Vesterbro Forum’s open circulation, the area maintains key connections to nearby points of interest — such as schools, a metro station, and a park — further promoting passersby to have daily interaction with classical music.
