THE GARDEN HUS
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK | DIS STUDIO | FALL 2017
GARDEN HUS, a new co-housing development in Norrebro, Copenhagen, Denmark, features a natural, light atmosphere ideal for its incoming residents and the surrounding neighborhood. Taking inspiration from Scandinavian vernacular architecture, the building’s form appears as a small village. A lush landscape around the property - open to the public - brings a sense of peace to an otherwise busy location.
Designed initially for three families - The Cooks, The Architect, and The Old Lady - the co-housing’s primary residents enjoy access to shared facilities such as a kitchen, living and dining rooms, laundry, and storage facilities. In an effort to give a sense of personal belonging, each family will have their own private bedrooms and bathrooms. Additionally, each family has a special area in the co-housing project specifically designed for their hobbies or interests - a cozy library for the Old Lady, a large flex space for the Cooks adjacent to the garden, and a quiet studio for the Architect and his son.
The ability to be outdoors, to garden, and connect with the community is of importance to all residents. To capitalize on the co-housing’s location near numerous schools, assisted-living facilities, and parks, GARDEN HUS features an expanse of green spaces and gardens. Open to the public throughout the year, these outdoor areas provide the neighborhood with another beautiful space to escape the chaos of the city. A central pathway maintains the essential connection to ByOasen, an urban farm behind the property, as well as access to a recycling center and garden shed.
